Post by Phil KitchenI believe it's just because of the Surrey/London border. I used to use 406
before Arriva gave it up in the days of London&Country's 4 buses an hour
service. When Arriva pulled out, i don't quite know why 406/418 and now 293
and 470 had their pass validity extended, but it's probably to do with that
Surrey County Council are VERY short of cash for Bus services!
I don't really understand <why> TfL has taken over these routes, but
I'm very glad they have. In the early days of Arriva running the 406,
it was over £4.00 return from Epsom to Kingston. Over the last few
years, the fares have come down, and now, thanks to TfL, it's just 65p
each way (using Saver tickets). Similarly, even a couple of years
ago, a return to Coulsdon on the 498 (then run by Epsom Buses) was
about £3.80: now, equally (as route 166), it's £1.30. Where else can
you say that bus fares are now less than one third the price five or
seven years ago?
Post by Phil KitchenOn the note of Bus Stops, the LT ones between Ewell Village and Epsom went
up to accomodate the launnch of the 470, in June. Before that, they went as
far as Ewell village (just before - Grange Mansions/Eight Bells) when the
406 was taken over by London United, and along route 418 to the last stop
before Epsom.
The bus stops themselves in Epsom Town Centre have just been reshuffled and
rebuilt (new shelters anyway), but no flags have appeared as yet.
Stops in Epsom town centre and on the loop round Epsom Hospital are
managed by Surrey CC (rather than any local operator), and have not
therefore been replaced with LT ones. In fact, they have all been
replaced by Surrey itself.
